The Perils of the SDV
The freedoms afforded by software-defined architectures can too easily lead OEMs to questionable decisions regarding safety.
If aliens visiting Earth for the first time had chosen to land at CES in January and walk around the West Hall, they could have been forgiven for thinking the only trend in the automotive industry is the software-defined vehicle. Whopping-TOPS processors, generative AI, digital cockpits, screens, screens, more screens are where it is at. So much so that hands-free supervised driving is suddenly passé and even eyes-off driving doesn't warrant a mention. Filling cars with software is what matters now, irrespective of whether it is distracting or not, or even if it works reliably.
